Real Cash Economy is an in-world economic system used in at least some MMORPGs. It allows a real money to be converted to ingame currency (via depositing or donating) and vice versa.
RCE Games
Entropia Universe (Sweden) is the most notable example of an MMORPG game employing a Real Cash Economy. The ingame currency Project Entropia Dollars (PED) has a fixed exhange rate of 10 PED to 1 USD (1 PED = 100 PEC). Players can deposit various amounts of currencies in exchange for PED; from 1,000 PED withdrawal option is available. Currency of withdrawal depends on the country of the player (USD for US residents, EUR for citizens of most European countries).
However, now it is time for major changes in this, because recently EU creator MindArk acquired Swedish banking institution MindBank for implementing so the called ATM "Cash Card", allowing more easy withdrawals and expanding concept of RCE even further. The other known game that uses the same concept is AfterWorld.
AfterWorld (Russia) largely uses the same ideas, but RCE here is oftenly referred to as RME (Real Market Economy). Also some moves toward implemention of the RCE concept recently were seen in WoW, starting from new options of enchancing the avatar's appearance. Real Cash Economy concept takes its roots from Korean Webzen company and first time became a commercial success in MindArk's Project Entropia game (now, though, it is officially called a gaming platform).
